WordPress 5.0 – The Gutenberg Update

The next major iteration of WordPress, version 5.0, will include an exciting update: an entirely new default text editor for pages and posts.

The new text editor is called ‘Gutenberg’ (cleverly named after the inventor who brought the printing press to the world). With Gutenberg, the average user will have a much easier time creating and editing pages. It’s much more intuitive, and users will have more control over layouts, colors, classes, images and videos.

This new text editor should make certain visual editors redundant. For many websites, that will lead to cleaner code, faster sites and — most importantly — happier visitors!

Curious about how it works? WordPress has a live demo you can check out at wordpress.org/gutenberg, where you can experiment with editing on that page directly to get a feel for how it will work on your own site.

So, what does this update mean for your website?

If you’re on Eyesore’s monthly service agreement, we have a plan in place to ensure your site has the smoothest update possible. We’re looking ahead and anticipating some issues with certain site configurations, so we will be testing all sites and updating them throughout December and January. We’re setting up risk-free testing environments for each client, and once we confirm that your site will work with this update, we will complete the update on your live site.

While Gutenberg will be comparatively easy to use, it will take a little hands-on time for you to get used to it. If you prefer to keep the old text editor, just let us know and we can accommodate that. The old editor will be available as a plugin moving forward.

At Eyesore, we’re more than a development team. We’re your actively-engaged rural outsourcing partner, and we’re looking out to make sure new technologies only enhance your editing- and user-experience.

And as always — if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
